I want a career in the military. i need some advice, please?

(Submitted by: S.N.)

Im studying to become a psychologist so im not exactly the type of girl that could hold a gun and shoot people… :( i would have a panic attack or die of shock if i was fighting in a foreign country. That sucks… but i love law enforcement..i would like to work at a place where everythng is about control, order, laws, etc etc.. i really like that… but i have no idea what to do!! any advice?
nothing involving math or being a lawyer…BORING. If i had the guts and if i wasnt engaged i would be a marine BUT..
I’ve thought about it so much that when i was 18 i was about to enroll but then my parents stopped me Im now 21. I also had a dream where i was signing papers and i could feel all the adrenaline and stuff….but at the same time im scared to death of guns and amputations

the best thing for you to do is, see wut you really want to do with your life, career wise, then if you really want to go in the military then go, after my 2 years is done i am going to NYPD. i am an MP in the us army right now, i love this, but it is not for everyone.

The military is needing psychologist more now than ever. You would more than likely never see a combat field. With all of the soldiers coming back from the war, with psychological problems, the military needs you. So continue to study, get your degree, and join. You would more than likely work in a hospital as a officer, and make lots of money helping soldiers with mental problems…..

This is for what The Honor said: There are psychologist in the army that never, I mean never go to a combat zone….they are needed here in the states…..they are primary care providers for soldiers that are returning home with mental issues….

    Go for it……Study hard

Sorry, but the military really doesn’t seem like the best choice for you.

Every person that joins every military branch has go to through several weeks of basic training. You are REQUIRED to fire guns, throw grenades, participate in war games where you shoot at people (nonlethally, of course) and fist-fight then, go through tear gas training where they force you to breathe poisonous gas into your lungs, and put you in warzone exercises where you have to crawl under barbed wire as real bullets wiz over your head.

If you can get through basic training, you are 85% likely or more to get sent to Iraq or Afghanistan unless you are in the coast guard. Lots of insurgents with guns, and even if you aren’t fighting on the front lines, roadside bombs to drive through and land mines to step on.

If you really want to join though, you want to finish psych school first and become an officer. That way you will get to do what you enjoy and your chances of being deployed to another country will be lower, though it’s still a chance.

Of course, you will get paid very well, increase your fitness and confidence, and serve your country. But unless all the above sounds very feasible to you, don’t join.

Please go into the Air Force. You have college and the Air Force is the place to be. Others in the Air Force are educated too. You will enjoy it.

I spent the last decade in the Air Force.

Straight up, if you join the military in today’s environment, you will go to war, It is a guarantee.

Don’t believe people who say you won’t. Even the Air Force is being deployed for up to 8 months at a time.

It is just the nature of the business in the service right now.

Stay in school and become a psychologist, then join the military. Go in as a psychologist you will make good money and will be respected as a professional. The Marines don’t have medical personnel, they are provided by the navy. Stay away from the army, they treat their people like crap. The air force also has psychologists. But if you want to work with and around Marines go to the navy.

Go the Air Force route and try to get your degree first and go in as an officer. Medical personnel (which you would be considered) only carry side arms normally speaking if they are assigned to a combat theater. The odds of you ever being tasked to serve in a combat role or combat support role would be very low as an Air Force medical person. Most never see a gun ever again once they qualify with it after in Basic or OTS unless they deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan. While these days there is a chance of that wars don’t normally last more than several years and these ones won’t either to the extent that they now are. Look into the ROTC programs that some colleges offer to help you qualify for education benefits and also to get a slot and commission into the Air Force. They have a limited number of slots in the mental health field as an officer and a psychologist and the competition to get one just by enlisting is tough.
